Canadian Grand Prix: Verstappen quickest in FP1

Friday's first result

Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen set the quickest time in opening practice for the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver led the way from McLaren's Lando Norris, with Fernando Alonso third for Aston Martin.

The session was affected by rain, which limited the amount of running that some drivers were able to do.

But Verstappen was able to set a time of 1:14.127 on the soft tyres, just 0.067 seconds quicker than Norris.

Alonso was a further 0.266 seconds back, with Carlos Sainz fourth for Ferrari and Sergio Perez fifth for Red Bull.

The session was red-flagged twice, once when Nicholas Latifi crashed his Williams at Turn 6 and again when Lance Stroll's Aston Martin stopped on track.

But the red flags did not prevent Verstappen from setting the pace. The Dutchman is looking to win the Canadian Grand Prix for the first time.

He will be confident of doing so after setting the quickest time in FP1. Verstappen is the favourite to win the race, having won five of the eight races so far this season.
